Queens Award

QUEENS AWARD FOR VOLUNTARY SERVICE

On Friday 12th November 2021 The Growing Zone was very proud to receive The Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire Mr. Ed Anderson who paid a visit to The Growing Zone Group Kippax to present the group with The Queens Award for Voluntary Service.

This award which is the MBE for Community Service was awarded to The Growing Zone on 2nd June 2021, for all their hard work on site and in the community since 2008.  The Growing Zone also received Special recognition for their continued work in the community  during the pandemic.

In attendance with the Lord Lieutenant was  the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr Asghar  Khan along with many valuable Growing Zone volunteers and supporters.

The Growing Zone Group is an independent community project which was built and is currently maintained by community volunteers and young people  of all abilities from our area, who have dedicated their valuable time over the years for the benefit of everyone.

The Growing Zone Site is also used for other groups to hold meetings and have fun days, as we have all the necessary facilities and equipment.

As a thank you to The Growing Zone  for all their unceasing community work  June Perkin

(GZ Founder Chair) and Louise Baker (Site Manager) were invited to Westminster Abbey along with other representatives of valued community groups from across the UK, to attend the “Together at Christmas” Carol Service on 8th December 2021.  This service was hosted by The Duchess of Cambridge with  other senior members of the Royal family present.

Additional Growing Zone Development

The Lord Lieutenant and the Lord Mayor also planted a fruit tree in the new GZ Community Orchard which is on Carters Field allotments and is part of the GZ  community inclusion  development and environmental plan.  The tree planting is to help the environment, to provide free fruit for the community and be a place of environmental interest.

This environmental  project has been funded by the residents of Kippax through the Kippax Co-op Community Fund.   The Co-op manager Mr Chris Rattrey was in attendance to help with the planting.

The Growing  Zone development plans for 2022 are to:

  1.     Plant more fruit trees in our area.

    2.    Expanding  our  Coming together Group which provides generic resources across our area for

           the participating groups.
